Derby Year 10 students seized the opportunity to be part of Big Engineering Day at Manchester University. They listened to a lecture detailing why we need engineers, how they do engineering and what they do. Representatives of the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering led the day.
The students heard how Mechanical Engineering is defined by the physics, Aerospace Engineering is all about the product and Civil Engineering is based on a philosophy. After the theory was explained they then went off to do a workshop where they were required to use Lego to build a platform that using could be raised pneumatically and mechanically to lift a bottle of water whilst adhering to a tight budget for the required parts. This was a tough challenge to complete in the allocated time.
The students left having received a thorough understanding of areas of engineering.
