Inspired to Make a Difference

Year 9 Options Evening

Year 9 Options Process

The two-year Key Stage Four Curriculum at The Derby High School is ambitious, broad and balanced with a strong core in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education (non-examined) and Personal Development (non-examined). With our expertise and guidance, students liaise with parents and families to make informed decisions about which option subjects they study. Students (particularly High Prior Attaining students) are encouraged to study the EBacc pathway which will include French and either Geography or History as this will allow them to access further education and careers at the highest level.  All students study nine GCSEs from an exciting range of creative and challenging course options as listed below.

Art, Business Studies, Computer Science, Creative Digital Media, Dance, Drama, Engineering, Food Studies, French, Geography, Health & Social Care, History, ICT, Music, Physical Education, Photography, Religious Studies, Textiles, Triple Science. (You can find more information about each of these courses in the Options Booklet linked at the foot of this page along with useful Careers information.

At The Derby High School, students are inspired to make a difference through a rigorous Careers programme from Year 7 onwards; this is supported by our Students’ Aspirations Lead Mrs Linton and links closely with the journey to making their Options choices.  In the Spring Term of Year 9, students have the opportunity to meet with a member of the Senior Leadership Team to discuss their Options.  Parents, carers and students should also attend Options Evening to find out more about the GCSE courses available to them.  Students then have some time to consider their options and discuss them with family and teachers before submitting their final choices.  It is an exciting time for our Year 9 cohort and a big step which will have a significant impact on their future plans; we urge them to take their Options journey seriously and expect to see them engage fully with all elements of the process.
