Philosophy

The departmental philosophy is to create an environment in which individual pupils can develop their own mathematical ability, so enabling them to approach, assess, and handle mathematical situations with confidence. We aim to achieve this through a broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum that will enable each pupil to realize his/her full potential.

Positive attitudes

The overall aim in everything we do and say should be to encourage a more positive attitude and even more important, by constant review, ensure that we do not give out and encourage negative attitudes. Once attitudes have been formed they can be very persistent and difficult to change. The amount to which we can influence older pupils should not prevent us from encouraging these positive attitudes in younger pupils as a long-term investment for us all.

Responsibilities

We should all encourage the notion in pupils that they have responsibilities in the learning process that the education they are receiving is mainly for their benefit and not the teacher’s. An atmosphere of trust should be encouraged, by focusing on achievement and not spending the majority of our time on punishing those who do not reach the required standard at the time we might expect them to.
